all started in 1964, when two young kids met, fell in love, married
and had two beautiful daughters. Growing up in California and having parents who loved growing grapes and making wine, it was easy to see how 44 years later Richard and Candice ended up in Livermore owning Les Chênes Estate Vineyards. Candice can remember when she was 16 and was invited to a Dixon family dinner. Seated at the table was the Dixon family along with a lot of family friends. Even though the Dixon’ are mostly French-Irish, their friends were all Italian. Sitting at the table was a new experience for me as the conversation was all about wine making and grape growing.
This is the 9th home-property we have owned in the 44 years of our marriage. No matter where we lived, we always grew grapes, working very hard and learning every day. Moving around was necessary, because of Richard’s work.
In 1993 we bought 60 acres in Sonoma to grow Pinot Noir. The plan was to retire on the land and live happily ever after. Circumstances happened with Richard’s work, where he had to spend most of his time in the central valley. We sold the Sonoma property and after a lot of research about land, soils and the best grapes to grow in the Livermore Valley, in 1999, we bought the property on Victoria Lane. The property was an old farm with a beautiful view. The land needed a lot of tender loving care, but we were ready for the challenge. After working hard and long for most of our lives, we decided to both retire and start our new life. We put our life savings together and contracted Wente to plant the vineyard, we built the building and opened the Winery in April of 2007 creating a heritage for our children and grandchildren.
Les Chênes Estate Vineyards offers a unique experience in the Livermore Valley. Although we are only open on the weekends for 4 hours each day, we have received rave reviews from the press and visitors. Most appreciated was Diablo Magazine, awarding us “Best New Winery of the East Bay” for 2007. We specialize in Rhone Style and Rhone inspired wines. We believe, the Livermore Valley is the place for Rhone varietals in California. We make every attempt to use only Estate Livermore Valley & San Francisco Bay Appellation fruit for our wine. We believe and our visitors confirm that we have one of the best views in the Valley; a panoramic view of hills and vineyards
That is why we are here. We love what we are doing, we love the people we meet and God willing, we will, live happily every after here in Livermore. Come in and enjoy and meet the Dixon’s.
